John T. Potter Obituary

John T. Potter, 82, of Dolgeville, New York (Town of Oppenheim) and a lifelong resident of Cold Brook, New York, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on June 10, 1940 in Hinckley, New York and was the son of the late, William and Alice (Hughes) Potter. John was educated at Holland Patent Central School District.

In 1961, John was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Gober in Salisbury, New York. The couple shared a blessed union of nearly 62 years together where they raised their 12 children in a loving home.

John was formerly employed by the Marcy State Hospital where he was a transporter. He retired after 25 years of service. While he was working and, in his retirement, he was a woodsman who sold firewood.

He was a member of the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club. In his spare time, John enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and camping at the family High Falls Camp. He liked to mow the lawn, visit the E-Bay Store and Stella’s Styles, and his daily runs to town for his 86-year-old wife, Shirley for whom he loved dearly. He was a true family man and his most special moments were spent in the company of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by them.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley J. Potter, Town of Oppenheim, NY; his loving children, Stella T. Lanphere and her husband, Dale of Dolgeville, NY, William F. Potter of Dolgeville, NY, Terri L. Farber and her husband, Christopher of Remsen, NY, Janet J. Potter and her wife, Bridget Potter of Concord, NH, Robert M. Potter and his wife, Tammy Potter of Remsen, NY, Dana Potter of Dolgeville, NY, John J. Potter of Fairfield, NY, and Jamie T. Tobin of Town of Ohio, NY; 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; siblings, William Potter of Hinkley, NY, Harold Potter of Vernon, NY, Isabelle Seelman of Remsen, NY and Kathleen Kerrigan of Remsen, NY; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William and Alice Potter; his beloved children, Julie Potter, Arron Israel, James Potter, and Donald Potter; and grandchildren, Robert M. Potter, Jr. and Janet J. Bursard, Jr.

A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Auskerada Place, 82 S. Main St., Dolgeville, NY 13329 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend. A private spring burial will be held in Curtis Corners Cemetery in the Town of Salisbury, New York. The family is being cared for by long time family friends of Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York.
