Domiano “Dip” V. Contino, 89, of Acacia Village, Utica New York and formerly of Dolgeville New York, passed away on Saturday morning, April 17th, 2021 at Masonic Care Community.
He was born on November 18, 1931 in Little Falls, New York and was the son of the late, James and Mary (Minicozzi) Contino. He attended Dolgeville Central School and graduated with the Class of 1949. "Dip" then went on further his education at ClarksonUniversity and Utica College. He served in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge. He returned home to Dolgeville to run the family grocery business called Contino's Grocery and worked to expand Contino’s Spaghetti Sauce enterprise. In later years, Dip had a small catering business.
Dip married the love of his life, Lois Ann Ward on April 22, 1956 at St. Joseph's Church in Dolgeville, New York where they shared a blessed union of nearly 65 years and raised their seven children in a loving home.
He was a member of the Dolgeville Businessmen’s Association, and was a charter member of the Dolgeville Ambulance Corps. Dip served on the Dolgeville School Board from 1973 until 1990 when he was elected to the Herkimer County Legislature representing District 10, Town of Manheim. In 1996, he was elected Chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature and supervised the construction of the new Herkimer County Office Building. In 2000, Dip was appointed Director of the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency and later served on the Dolgeville Village Board.
Dip was a lifelong and devout parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Little Falls Elks, Dolgeville Masonic Lodge, and American Legion. In 2012, he and his wife were named the Dolgeville Violet Festival King and Queen.
He was an avid Giants fan who enjoyed cooking for and spending time with family and friends, trips to the Saratoga Race Track, the annual Contino Boys Football Pool and of course, talking politics.
Dip is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois Ann (Ward) Contino, and seven children; Anne Marie Contino of Whitesboro NY, Kathy Contino-Turner and partner, Wayne Turkowski of Ilion, NY, James Contino and wife, Dawn of Camas WA, Michael Contino of Henderson NY, Linda Lamb and husband, Wade of Ilion, NY, Mark Contino and wife, Cullin of Spokane WA, and Carol Vogel and husband, Andrew of Little Falls, NY. He was especially proud of his 11 grandchildren; Alysa Turner, Erin Turner, Catherine Contino, Emily (Contino) Harris, Caroline Contino, Kevin Contino, Thomas Contino, Nathan Contino, Evan Lamb, Caitlin Contino, and Kyle Contino. He was predeceased by his sister, Josephine Pugliese and his son-in-law, Paul Turner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Church, 31 N. Helmer Ave., Dolgeville, New York on Saturday morning, April 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Leo Potvin officiating. The Contino Family will receive family and friends at 10:30 a.m. at the vestibule of St. Joseph’s Church prior to the Mass. Please wear a facemask and social distancing procedures will be adhered to. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Arrangements are entrusted to Miller-Plonka Funeral Home and Roberts Funeral Home, 3. East Faville Avenue, Dolgeville, New York.
