Carolyn E. (Aubin) Walker Obituary

Carolyn E. (Aubin) Walker, 93, of Stratford, New York and more recently of Valley Residential Services in Herkimer, passed away on Friday afternoon, October 21, 2022 at Little Falls Hospital in Little Falls, New York with her beloved daughters and granddaughter, Kaegan by her side.

Carolyn was born on September 5, 1929 in Stratford, New York and was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Pearl (Bullock) Aubin. She attended Stratford Central school, then graduated from the Nathan Littauer School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse at Little Falls Hospital for several years before continuing her education at SUNY Oswego earning a Bachelor's degree in Career and Technical Education.

She was married to John (Jack) Walker January 29, 1951 and they maintained a strong and loving marriage until his death in 2010. Together they had five daughters and a son.

She was a teacher of practical nursing before working as the Coordinator of the Nursing Programs at Herkimer County BOCES for 22 years. After retiring from teaching, she continued to work for her favorite hometown. She was elected to the position of Stratford Town Clerk, serving for six years. She then sat on the town board and was the town Historian.

Carolyn always believed in ‘giving back’ to her community. She was a member and later president of the Stratford school board and she led the local girl scout troop. As a member of the Stratford Methodist Church, she sat on multiple committees and most importantly sang in the choir. Carolyn was also a member of the Scotch Bush Free Methodist Church. She was very active as a member of the Stratford Historical Society and the Stratford Senior citizens. Carolyn was largely responsible for all of the music programs presented in the town hall and gazebo during her tenure. She would ‘sing her children awake’ way too early in the mornings! Being a nurse and committed to her profession, she was often looking after the older members of her community. Everyone seemed to know and love Carolyn. Often people would stop a daughter and say “I know you are one of Carolyn and Jack’s daughters, I just don’t know which one!”

Carolyn was a voracious reader, and instilled a love of reading to her children. When not reading in her spare time, she could be found in her precious asparagus and rhubarb beds and what Jack affectionately called her ‘weed bed’ of flowers or picking berries. She canned and preserved the vegetables Jack grew in the gardens and made the most delicious green tomato mincemeat for pies. She believed, as her mother did, that preserving family history was important. Carolyn collected as much information as she could to pass on to her children. She would visit the local rural cemeteries, pointing out to her children who was who and how they were related.

A loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend and community member, Carolyn will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters; Gail (James) Saracino of Mayfield, NY, Karen Collis of Dolgeville, NY, Brenda (Keith) Goodfriend of Clifton Park, NY, Janet (Barry) Vickers of Salisbury, NY and Laura Walker of Lake Placid, NY; a daughter-in-law, Trish W. Ludwig; many grandchildren; Kyla, Kaegan, Erin, Eric, Amber, Nicholas, Andrew, Mathew, Mandy, Meagan, Dana, Justin and Autumn; and 16 great-grandchildren. Carolyn was one of six children and she is survived by her siblings, Nelda Cheney of St. Johnsville, NY, Leo Aubin of Stratford, NY, Rosalie Blanchard of Indian Lake, NY and Randa Davis of Oklahoma as well as her close friend Marjorie Youker of Dolgeville, NY; and several nieces, nephews and extended relatives.

She was predeceased by her beloved son, Brian John Walker in 2012, a beloved son-in-law David Collis, one brother, Ronald Aubin.
