Charles Gilchrist Obituary

Charles H. Gilchrist, 80, of Salisbury Center, New York, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, May 15, 2019 at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam, New York, while surrounded by his loving family.

 

He was born on March 23, 1939 in White Plains, New York and was the son of the late, Harry and Ethel (McLarty) Gilchrist.  Charles was educated and graduated from Irving High School

 

On February 18, 1964, Charles enlisted in the United States Army and served two years state side being honorably discharged on February 17, 1966.

 

On November 12, 2011, Charles was united in marriage to his long time companion, Vera M. King in Northville, NY.  The couple share a blessed union of 50 years together.

 

Charles worked for the Sullivan Paper Company in Little Falls, New York for 16 years until his retirement in 2004.  Prior to that employment, he was employed by Daniel Greens and Cintas throughout the years.

 

Charles was of the Methodist faith and was a parishioner of the Stratford United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, gardening and all outdoor activities.  His most precious time was spent with the ones he loved.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Vera M. King-Gilchrist at home; his children, Valerie Mickels and her companion, Mark Sanford, of Gloversville, NY; Larania Falcone and her companion, John Traskey of Salisbury Center, NY; Susan Welke and her husband, Richard Jr. of Amsterdam, NY and Donald King and his companion, Patty May of Pennsylvania; one brother; Jim Merritt and his wife, Sylvia of Cobleskill, NY; one sister, Elaine of NC; special friends and neighbors, Lawrence and Rosie Bullock of Salisbury Center, NY; several brothers and sisters in law, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Charles was predeceased by a son, Thomas King on April 26, 2018 and a brother, Robert Merritt.

 

A graveside memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Dibble Tuttle Cemetery in Salisbury, New York.  United States Army Funeral Honors will be accorded immediately following the service.  The family is being served by Roberts Funeral Home, 3 East Faville Avenue, Dolgeville, New York 13329.
